How It Works

Warm-season turf such as couch and buffalo varieties naturally shift their energy toward roots in cooler months when shoot growth slows. Mild Perth winters allow continued root activity when the soil has been amended to retain moisture, nutrients, and temperature.

UWA research (Louise Barton, Tim Colmer, and colleagues) over many years quantified high nitrogen leaching under turf across many Perth suburbs sandy soils. Losses are particularly elevated during rainfall (winter), and after the heavy watering needed after turf is initially laid. Lysimeter studies showed substantial drainage and nutrient movement deeper into the ground and away from the lawn roots. Their management strategies focused on matching nutrient inputs to plant demand and improving retention.

A Murdoch University (SoilsWest) column study on WA sandy soil found that combined compost + clay (e.g., ~6% clay) reduced ammonium leaching by ~30% and phosphorus by 30–50% versus unamended sand, while retaining higher levels of multiple nutrients in the soil.

UWA work by McKissock, Gilkes, Walker and others on WA soils showed that small additions of clay sharply reduce water-drop penetration time. Raising clay content toward or above ~5% was found to be a key threshold for control.

Horticulture Innovation project TU13000 at the UWA Turf Research Facility tested bentonite, kaolinite, compost and a range of other amendments. Finer-grained materials (bentonite, kaolinite clays + compost) increased topsoil water-holding capacity and reduced deep drainage compared with controls or coarser amendments. Best results for turf colour under limited irrigation occurred when fine amendments were placed in a band deeper (5–15 cm) rather than only at the surface. Modelling also indicated reduced evaporative losses.

Research from King Saud University found clay content influences heating and cooling rates; with soils containing clay retaining daytime heat longer into the evening (one green-park field observation noted warmer evenings in clay-richer areas in winter). Moisture is a major driver of soil thermal behaviour — wetter soils change temperature more slowly.
